This is a typical dress for the Zulu men when attending an important function.
Nowadays because of westernization, not too many people own 'ibheshu' or traditional attire but rather a westernised version. These pants are called 'umbhulaselo' which are pants that have patches sewn decoratively on. It is thought that they originated when pants were wearing out and to give them a new lease of life patches were sewn onto them, but it was done in such a way that it seemed like they were designed to look like that and were not simply mended old pants. These are usually worn with a waistcoat decorated in the same manner, or a vest.
I arrived at the site for an event (see blog spot titled WOMEN'S ABUSE PREVENTION EVENT) and this darling little boy hung around all day.
I couldn't stop taking pictures of him.
I thought perhaps he was attending a function today ~ wedding, gift giving, funeral to be wearing this outfit.
Nope, he was just hanging with us all day.
The other boys didn't like all the attention he was getting from the enamored Americans.
On his head is a umqhele ~ The tufts of a cows tail
At one point in the 5 hour event, whist everyone was busy socializing we all heard this sweet, little voice singing. Yup, this angel boy was singing away at the top of his lungs.
What a precious little cutie-pie!
