How To Build A House 101 (Day 2)

Unless the Lord builds the house,

    the builders labor in vain.
Psalm 127:1

Day two of building Gogo Shabalala and her 12 orphans a new home.

Unfortunately, I was consumed with other responsibilities at the creche until 2pm.

Man oh man,  the awesome group  got a ton of work done this morning.
New window frames.

Last side going UP.

Today was exceptionally hot.

One header up above the window.  Fiani and Drew up on the scaffold.

Lorna buttering the cinder block.

The children of the house were helping out.

Plus I brought along two friends of mine, here is Joe, the Mayor of Ntshongweni.

Here's a lesson on how to butter a block.
#1. set the block up on its end

#2. taking a trowel, apply a liberal amount of mortar

#3. form the mixture like a volcano... higher in the center, sloping downwards.

#4. thusly

Door front frame in place and the team is headed that-a-way.

Took two men to carry the next header over.

ready to hand it up.

Handing it up.

All set and in place :)

Michael is cutting, chopping, hacking, doing whatever it takes to make this block shorter.

Buttered blocks ready to be placed by Les.

Onto the second row.

The door how has its header.

And yes I was working too.  Buttering away and quickly, there were more men setting blocks than people helping me.
